Dialogue, discernment, regeneration
Nexus is a coaching, consulting, training, and facilitation firm, whose mission is to serve the development and regeneration of those organisations that our 21st century needs.
In this context, since 2006, we have been accompanying religious congregations seeking to find a new breath of life, a new momentum, in an ever-changing world and Church.
Our bespoke methodology at the service of your collective discernment
Our methodology is designed to enable all members of the congregation to listen, together and as One Body, to what God seems to be calling them to, and thus contribute to the process that will enable the right decisions to be made for the life and vitality of their congregation’s mission. In that way, since 2010, we have built our approach on the principles of synodality, developped by Pope Francis almost 10 years later.
An international, connected team
In 20 years, we have built a solid team, capable of intervening all over the world, and in several languages: French, English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Slovenian, Polish… It is composed of lay professionals, experts in accompanying transformation, and in the methodology of dialogue and facilitation of large groups; and we regularly work in pairs with religious women and men, to create an approach that integrates the dimensions of group facilitation, spiritual animation and canonical questions.
Our accompaniement
1. Preparation and facilitation of Chapters (General and Provincial)
Since 2008, we have accompanied about forty Provincial Chapters, and about twenty General Chapters, for groups ranging from 20 to 100 capitulars, and speaking up to 7 official languages.
Prior to a Chapter, we work with a Preparation Committee appointed by the General Council (or directly with the General Council as needed), to design and lead a preparation process that can involve the whole Body, and prepare the discernment that will take place at the Chapter.
2. Facilitation of meetings/assemblies
We facilitate all types of assemblies in the life of a congregation: “Ordinary” provincial assembly, meetings of young sisters/brothers, Extended General Council, meetings of treasurers, etc.
3. Accompanying reconfiguration
Many congregations also approach us after a Chapter, when the new team wishes to implement a reconfiguration mandate given by the Chapter – whether at the level of a province, a merger between provinces, or a reconfiguration of the whole Congregation.
We then design with the team a process that can involve as many members of the Body as possible, to allow them to be the authors of the new reality, rather than merely putting up with it, or even oppose it.
It is a profound Pascal journey that we accompany, where we explore both the kenosis to which the Body, and each of its members, is called, and the new that is called to be born.
4. Conflict Resolution
Thanks to our expertise in Generative Dialogue and Non-Violent Communication, we often intervene in situations of interpersonal conflict, within a Council, or between a Council and other parts of the Body, for example.
Our methodologies allow us to help stakeholders express what they are experiencing and feel heard; to make sense together of what is at stake at the heart of this conflict; and to agree on solutions to transform this conflict, enter into a dynamic of forgiveness and reconciliation, and find healthy foundations for resuming their relationship.
5. Leadership trainings for local, provincial and general leaders
Our experience has shown us the growing importance of training those who will be entrusted with responsibilities not only in administration but also in leading and animating the Body. To this end, we offer leadership training and supervision programmes at these different levels, both in person and remotely, and have even developed 100% self-directed online training courses.
Our consultants also lead a training course specifically for religious women – My Incarnated Leadership – hosted at each edition in a different spiritual center.
6. Support on difficult and painful topics
Beyond interpersonal conflicts, some congregations that we accompany may be going through particularly difficult and painful situations: spiritual abuse and control, financial misconduct, physical violence, sexual abuse and criminal proceedings for some of their members…
With sensitivity and confidentiality, we accompany them through these situations and help them make the necessary decisions.
7. Governance issues (Tutelle, Foundations, Associations, etc.)
In Europe and the Northern Hemisphere more generally, the aging and decline of their members present congregations with a major challenge: to strengthen the institutions in charge of implementing their mission by consolidating their governance through trusted lay people, who report to major superiors but without requiring too many religious.
We therefore accompany the creation of foundations, the consolidation of the governance of owner associations, as well as the structuring of the Tutelle for educational establishments in France.
8. Prospective studies (demographics, finance)
The aging and declining number of members in the congregations of the North have generated new challenges, which must be addressed as early as possible, in order to give them the means to choose, rather than letting life choose for them. When they also have communities or provinces in the South, these congregations experience a pivotal moment between North and South, which requires discernment and informed choices to live it in the best way, in service of the vitality of the Body and its Mission.
To accompany them, we conduct prospective studies on the demographics and finances of the congregation, and facilitate discernment processes enabling the Body to make the necessary choices accordingly.
9. Real estate assets
Faced with declining membership in the northern provinces, the real estate assets of congregations, once a real asset for the mission, are increasingly becoming a burden to manage, without necessarily having the internal skills to do so.
Through bringing into our team real estate experts (architects, real estate asset managers, etc.), we accompany congregations in evaluating their assets and making informed choices about the future of their buildings (sale, rental investment, transfer so that another work can continue, etc.).
Why work with us?
Since 2006, we have been developing tailor-made processes for each of the congregations we accompany, starting from their reality and co-constructing with them the process best suited to their intention.
We combine different areas of expertise (facilitation of large groups, organisational transformation, spiritual journey, management of dynamics and conflicts, multilingualism, some knowledge of Canon law) to accompany you with both deep empathy for your unique situation and sufficient experience from other congregations to help you take a step back and give birth to your own solutions, without ever imposing anything onto you.
Our accompaniment integrates both the functioning and transformation of the Body, as well as the conversion to which each of its members is called on this Paschal journey; fraternal relationships as well as those of roles; synodality as well as the just and adjusted exercise of authority and obedience.
Testimonies
Matthieu Daum accompanied us from 2010 to 2017, a pivotal period as the three European provinces merged into a single province in 2011. Thanks to his expertise and professionalism, those years became an exciting adventure in co-creation where, whilst respecting everyone’s different roles, each of us was able to play a full part in the unification process. I remain deeply grateful for Matthieu’s support, for his great respect for people and his ability to move forward with us, step by step.
Véronique Fabre, Cenacle Sister, former Provincial for the Europe-Togo Province
« In a context of ageing and diminishment, Nexus has partnered with Society of Mary in Europe to strengthen leadership, reimagine structures, and revitalise its mission, nationally and internationally, ranging from leadership accompaniment, professional training and supervision, Provincial Chapters, ministry evaluation, and a major two-year organisational transformation.
The teams approach combines strategic clarity with deep respect for identity and mission born of their understanding of and respect for the culture of religious life, all delivered with warmth.
Working with Nexus, we were able to rethink how we lead and organise ourselves, through a creative, consultative process that enabled us to design new leadership and governance structures across eight countries, generating strong ownership of the outcome and a sense of unity. What could feel overwhelming became manageable thanks to their professional rigour and human touch. »
Martin McAnaney, former Provincial for the Europe Province, Society of Mary
« We entered into contact with Matthieu through the recommendation of another Congregation because we were searching for a facilitator for our general chapter, looking for different manners of approach our needs, discern together in the multicultural reality of our Congregation, and also in a process of organisational transformation. We found it interesting and provocative, to have a lay person as facilitator in our general chapter for the first time in our history. This was a great exercise in the preparatory process and during the chapter.
We were a group of leaders, leaving and working from different perspectives, and we practiced how to build good relationships and work together from our differences.
I recommend Nexus, because they help to mobilise our mental models and their methodsd (such as the “U” process) help us to transform our manner of thinking, feeling, work, and organize our actions to impact. »
Yaneth Moreno Rodriguez, SDS, Superior General, Salvatorian Sisters
« Nexus accompanied and advised us during a crucial phase in the development of our congregation, when we were facing major changes.
With their support, we undertook and successfully completed a profound process of transformation involving all 5,000 sisters across 71 countries on every continent.
What I appreciated: the quality of their expertise, their attentiveness, their respect, their understanding of our realities, and the firmness and flexibility with which they walked alongside us.
With the vision and tools we have equipped ourselves with, we can continue to chart our course towards the future with clear guidelines that bring our energies together. »
Françoise Massy, FMM, former Superior General of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary
« As part of the French Bishops’ Conference’s ongoing reflection on the development of our governing bodies, Nexus’s support helped us to take a step back and organise a process involving numerous stakeholders. I particularly appreciated your ability to listen and your understanding of how ecclesiastical institutions operate, as well as the way you facilitated a genuine period of discernment. Your involvement helped to advance a complex process and to clarify several avenues for the future. »
Bishop Hugues de Woillemont, former Secretary General of the French Bishops’ Conference and current Director General of L’Œuvre d’Orient
« For several years, our Franciscan Province was unable to make important decisions. We made decisions based on urgent matters and, it must be said, on the influence of certain brothers. In 2022, on the advice of other Franciscan congregations, we turned to Nexus. This work involved virtually all the members of our fraternities. It required a significant level of commitment. Above all, it has been a process of learning to listen to one another, of speaking the truth, and of taking a clear and shared view of our situation. Little by little, barriers came down and we rediscovered ourselves as part of the same body, the same Province. The last chapter has enabled us to gain a clearer understanding of our limitations, but also of our strengths and our shared desire to live in the world in a Franciscan way. And ultimately, to take decisions that are widely supported. Through this process, synodality is no longer just an idea, but is gradually beginning to take root in our practices. »
Frédéric-Marie Le Méhauté, OFM, Provincial of France-Belgium
“The preparation for the General Chapter was a time of grace for us. We were accompanied by Matthieu Daum, from Nexus, both in the preparation and in the facilitation of the General Chapter. All the sisters of the Congregation were invited to participate in this journey in a creative and prayerful manner, and to look upon the reality of the Congregation with gratitude so that we might respond courageously to the call of Wisdom in the current context and reality. The fact that we didn’t have a predefined theme during the preparation meant we weren’t confined to a single theme, but were instead able to discern at every moment where God was leading us. I am grateful to Nexus for helping us to break out of our routines and embark on a new path of renewal, as we sought and explored together how to fulfil God’s plan.”
Rani Kurian, fdls, Superior General for the Daughters of Wisdom
« Nous voudrions vraiment vous remercier pour cette belle formation au leadership [Mon Leadership Incarné]. Merci pour le temps et l’énergie que vous avez consacrés, votre bienveillance, votre enthousiasme et votre pédagogie ; les exemples concrets ont rendu cette formation très enrichissante.
Nous vous en sommes sincèrement reconnaissantes ; sachez que vous êtes toujours la bienvenue chez nous.
Avec sincère gratitude »
Régina, Provincial of France, and her Council, Our Lady of the Missions
« As a leadership team of a religious missionary congregation, we realized that we could not continue as before and needed a new way forward. Through the Nexus consultation, we learned to communicate differently—using generative speaking and listening—and together designed a transformative process inspired by the U process. This journey led us to a decisive shift from repetition to regeneration. Their guidance helped us take courageous steps and begin functioning in a renewed, life giving way as a congregation. We warmly recommend their work to any community seeking genuine renewal! »

Discover the Congregations We Have accompanied
A book, an intimate and professional journey
Matthieu Daum has been a business consultant for twenty years. One day, he was approached by a religious community to resolve an internal crisis, and soon other congregations were calling on him to accompany their organisational transformation.
Over time, he developed a specific approach to help them renew and regenerate. But another, more subtle and unexpected transformation was taking place: his own.
Forging his own spiritual path, he reconnected with faith in “the mystery we call God”. He has become both transformer and transformed. The author recounts his profoundly human story: it connects people who are searching for themselves and seeking to be born into something new, to be reborn from above.(Jn 3, 7).
